“Getting adequate childcare is one of the greatest difficulties facing working families today. In many cases, parents can who find a job, can not take it because of the high cost of childcare.”
Alfreda Houston, Director Emeritus
St. Vincent’s House provides quality day care and early childhood education to children two(2)–five(5) years of age from families of very low to moderate income at an affordable cost. St. Vincent’s House Day Care/Preschool offers subsidized program opportunities based on a sliding income qualifier application.
Our vision encourages a strong literacy preparation and cultural enrichment through an esteem based curriculum. The Pre-School program fosters a safe and nurturing environment to help each child develop and model:
A curiosity for learning
Confidence and self-reliance
A healthy concept of him/herself
Appropriate emotional & social behavior
A command of basic language skill
His/her creative potential
A cultural, environmental and spiritual awareness of themselves and their world
The Preschool curriculum also offers science, computer training and Spanish. Children are exposed to art, music and assorted multi-media projects through our Artist-In-Residence program. An “Earth-friendly” focus is incorporated in the Preschool curriculum that encourages our students and their parents to be environmentally conscious and responsible. The children learn about protecting nature in their garden and regularly recycle newspaper.
With the addition of the Healthy Start nutrition program, the Preschool has taken a leading role in providing good nutritional meals and modeling good nutritional habits. Nutritionally balanced meals are served daily for breakfast and lunch. For many children, this may be the only balanced meal they get until the next day.
Being located in the heart of the neighborhood that our families and clients live is another important benefit that makes the St. Vincent’s House Preschool program so vital. The Preschool opens its doors from 6:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, offering a year round program based on calendar year and not the semester year. This allows for a continuum of care throughout the summer.
